Video poker players are a loyal lot. They love their Double Double Bonus Poker, Bonus Poker Deluxe and other games that have been around for decades.

Unlike slot players, who are eager to try out the latest spins on bonus fun, video poker players take some time to accept new games.

When I first started playing video poker some 25 years ago, I knew about the importance of playing with an edge.

It is no secret that returns from video poker games have been on the decline. Such is capitalism. Casino management wants to make the most profit possible from the gaming floor. Consider the three pay tables shown below. They are for Jacks or Better. They include the full-pay (sometimes called 9/6) as well as lesser paying schedules.

I received an email from a video poker player who asked me this question:

“I can never win at video poker. Are the video poker machines rigged?”

Joker’s Wild is a fun variation on video poker, one that has carved out its own niche of loyal players. Like all video poker games, Joker’s Wild comes in a variety of pay tables and payback percentages.

It's not merely that after a draw, pairs can turn into three of a kind, full houses or four of a kind to boost your credit meter.

Shockwave Video Poker is a unique style of Jacks or Better video poker. There are two different modes of play – normal and Shockwave. The normal mode is exactly what it sounds like – normal Jacks or Better play. It accounts for well over 90 percent of play. The game operates in normal mode until a four-of-a-kind hit.

Golfing legend Arnold Palmer once quipped, “It’s a funny thing, the more I practice the luckier I get.” There is a whole lot of truth to what he said. Practice is important in developing and honing any skill.
