All games of roulette are played in much the same way, regardless of the variant. Whether you're playing American Roulette, European Roulette, or French Roulette, the general rules hold true. Place your roulette chips on numbers, groups of numbers, or other selections. Next, the roulette croupier will spin the ball in the opposite direction to the motion of the roulette wheel. When the ball lands in a pocket, that’s the money-maker.
In American Roulette, there are 3 broad-based bet selections available to you:
- Number Bets - bets on individual numbers, or groups of numbers.
- Color Bets – bets on the color of the next number to land – either red or black. Note that the green 0 does not feature as a color bet.
- Odd or Even Bets – bets on whether the next number to land will be odd or even. There are 18 odd numbers, 18 even numbers, and 0, and 00.
Beyond the basics, there are other bet types in American Roulette known as Inside Bets and Outside Bets. More specifically, we define these broad-based bets as follows:
- Inside Bets – individual numbers and groups of numbers including the 0, 00, numbers 1-36 on the roulette betting deck. Single Number Bets, Split Bets, Trio Bets, Street Bets, Corner Bets, Five Number Bets, and Double Street Bets. Inside bets have much higher payout odds, but the likelihood of hitting them is lower.
- Outside Bets - all the other betting combinations on the roulette betting deck are considered outside bets. For example, First 12, Second 12, Third 12, 1-18, 19-36, odd or even, red or black, 2 to 1 et cetera. Outside bets often come good, because they are broad-based bets. However, the payout odds are less than inside bets.
Different Bet Types in American Roulette
- Straight Up Bets – these bets are placed on individual numbers.
- Split Bets – these bets are placed on the dividing line between any two numbers on the roulette board.
- Trio Bets – these bets are placed on the following combinations of numbers 0, 1, 2, or 0, 00, 2, or 00, 2 and 3.
- Street Bets – at the end of any row in roulette, you can bet on a total of three numbers in that row.
- Corner Bets – these bets are placed on the intersection of four numbers. Find any square of four numbers and place your chip where all four numbers meet.
- Line Bets – a line bet covers a total of six numbers, and is placed on the line dividing two streets. Each street covers three numbers, so line bets cover six numbers. For example, if you wanted to cover numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, you would place your chip on the First 12 line between numbers 1 & 2
- Dozen Bets - these are placed in the boxes labelled First 12, Second 12, and Third 12. They cover the first dozen, second dozen, and third dozen, for a total of 36 numbers. Note that the 0 & 00 are excluded.
- Column Bets - these bets are placed on all the selections labeled 2 to 1 at the bottom of the roulette betting deck. Each 2 to 1 option includes 12 numbers. Note that the 0 and 00 are excluded from Column Bets.
- 1-18 and 19-36 Bets – these bets are known as low and high bets respectively. 1-18 covers all numbers between 1-18, and 19-36 covers all numbers between 19-36. Note that the 0 and 00 are excluded.
- Red or Black Bets – these are bet selections on the color of the next number to land. There are 36 red or black options in total, and 2 green pockets (0 and 00).
- Odd or Even Bets – you can bet on odd numbers or even numbers. Be advised that 0 and 00 are excluded from Odd or Even bets.
- Five Number Bets - these are bets on 0, 00, 1, 2, 3. It is only possible to place this bet in American Roulette. There are no trio bets in American Roulette.
NICE TO KNOW!
American Roulette differs from European Roulette and French Roulette, since there is no option for betting exclusively on the roulette wheel. These call bets or announced bets are only available on the European and French versions of the game.
The number sequence on an American Roulette wheel is also different to the number sequence on European Roulette wheels. Take a look at the following number sequences (in a clockwise fashion) in each of these unique variants:
American Roulette Sequence – 0, 28, 9, 26, 30, 11, 7, 20, 32, 17, 5, 22, 34, 15, 3, 24, 36, 13, 1, 00, 27, 10, 25, 29, 12, 8, 19, 31, 18, 6, 21, 33, 16, 4, 23, 35, 14, 2
European Roulette Sequence - 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, 25, 17, 34, 6, 27, 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10, 5, 24, 16, 33, 1, 20, 14, 31, 9, 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26
Hot and Cold Numbers in American Roulette

Roulette Playing Tips
Look for Games with "Surrender"
In the American Roulette, "surrender" cuts the house edge in half. Instead of a 5.26 percent edge, the player now only deals with a 2.63 percent edge. Search for games with surrender and only play those outside "even-money" bets.
Play in a Leisurely Fashion
Remember, online roulette is a leisurely game so play it a relaxed fashion. Don’t be in a rush to get out your bets as fast as possible.
Don’t Sweat a Loss on a Previous Number you didn’t Bet this Time
So imagine you’re consistently betting 9, spin after spin, but it never hits. In fact, no number even in its vicinity hits! Perhaps the wheel is cursed or the no. 9 pocket has a hidden roulette ball repelling device -who knows?
So, being clever, you decide to bet on a pocket opposite to the 9. But as luck would have it, the 9 hits this time!
Don’t sweat it. The game is completely random and no "gods" or "fate" had anything to do with it. Some pocket had to hit and it happened to be that one. The ball wasn’t thinking, "Let’s mess with the guy betting on 9."
Play Within Your Bankroll
The player next to you is a high-roller placing bets in the C$1000’s on the numbers. He’s betting more than you make in a year! Meanwhile your bets are in the single digit range, dwarfed and insignificant.
Nonsense. The smart player only bets with what he can afford and monitors his bankroll carefully. Don’t be enamoured by betting amounts, the odds are the same regardless.
Look for Biased Wheels
A biased roulette wheel is one that hits a certain number/numbers disproportionately to their probability. Naturally, in order to determine whether a wheel is indeed biased you’d have to study that particular wheel for thousands upon thousands of spins.
Indeed, the players who broke the bank at Monte Carlo did just that. However, it would be quite a feat for players to manage something similar with today’s modern, computer balanced wheels. Most probably impossible.
But here’s a way to pretend to play at a biased wheel. Check the scoreboard for repeat numbers and base your bets around that. Remember these repeat numbers are not indicative of a biased wheel, but it sure is fun to imagine they are!
